Stingrays are animals that have adapted to living in the sands near the coast. Usually they keep themselves buried in the sand to hide from their main predators, such as sharks.
But this only offers limited protection and leaves them vulnerable once their presence is detected. So, this animal has developed an ingenious defense mechanism consisting of a poisonous stinger located at the end of the tail.
Scuba divers usually encounter an animal that exhibits some curiosity and seems sociable. Once the ray learns that you are not a threat, you can feed him or even pet the animal.
The newest attraction in Cozumel is designed to provide a unique learning adventure in a safe and very comfortable way to enjoy these magnificent creatures. The rays have been trained to be comfortable around humans and they're kept in an acre-wide section of water where they donīt need their barbed tails for defense against natural predators. That means you can swim safely without having to worry about getting stung. A guide gears you up for an hour-long stingray snorkeling or scuba diving session. You are also welcome to feed the rays and feel the silky texture of their skin.
